Guilherme Monteiro grew up in Brasil in the cities of Rio, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte where he played with Toninho Horta and Tavinho Moura. He moved to the States in 1992 where he studied with Joe Diorio and Hal Crook. In 1999 he was accepted to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, a highly selective program that only has one member per instrument. At the Monk Institute Guilherme studied with Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath and David Baker. Living in Brooklyin, New York since 2000, he can be heard on inumerous recordings, including Luciana Souzas Duos II (which won a Grammy nomination), Eliane Elias Dreamer, with Mark Johnson and Michael Brecker, Slide Hamptons Jobim Tribute, with Claudio Roditi. He can also be heard alongside with Lee Konitz, Joao Bosco (on Nilson Mattas record) and on Kurt Ellins upcoming alease “Night Moves”. In 2003 he joined Lila Downs band with whom he recorded “One Blood” (which won a Latin Grammy) and La Cantina. In 2004 he joined Duduka Da Fonsecas quintet, with whom he recorded the album Samba Jazz In Black and White. In 2005 Guilherme ecorded his own album, due this year, which features Ben Street, Jochen Ruckert, Jerome Sabbagh, Lila Downs, Jorge Continentino, Chiara Civello and Gilmar Gomes.
